In short: family mediation lets you negotiate a separation agreement with the help of a neutral, accredited professional. The Québec government offers couples with dependent children a number of sessions with a professional mediator, free of charge.
Separating means making dozens of decisions at a time when emotions run high. Mediation provides a structured setting to do it without turning every decision into a battle.
What is family mediation?
It is a voluntary process in which an accredited mediator (a trained, neutral professional) helps both parents or spouses reach agreement on what follows the separation: parenting time, support payments, division of property.
What to expect, concretely
- First meeting: the mediator explains the process and assesses whether mediation suits your situation;
- Negotiation meetings: each topic is addressed one at a time, in a respectful setting;
- Summary of agreements: the mediator drafts a document summarizing what was agreed.
Good to know. Mediation is conducted with respect for everyone: the mediator does not take sides and makes sure each person can speak.
