What is a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment is an in-depth look at how a person’s cognition works: memory, attention, concentration, executive functions, language and more. Using standardized tests and a clinical interview, it helps clarify a person’s strengths and difficulties, refine a diagnosis where applicable, and produce personalized recommendations that support independence and quality of life.
A regulated professional framework. In Quebec, evaluating neuropsychological disorders is an activity governed by the Ordre des psychologues du Québec: only holders of the Order’s attestation may use the title “neuropsychologist.” At Clinique Octobre, assessments are carried out within this framework.
What the assessment can clarify
Neurodevelopmental conditions
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability and specific learning disorders (dyslexia, dysorthographia, dyscalculia), including to support a request for accommodations.
Medical or neurological conditions
Changes in memory, attention or concentration linked to an illness (stroke, brain tumour, epilepsy, cancer, other neurological or medical conditions) or to a medical treatment such as chemotherapy.
Aging and neurodegenerative disease
Age-related cognitive changes, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, to document how things evolve and guide follow-up.
Services are offered to adults (18 years and older).
How the assessment works
Clinical interview (about 75 minutes)
A meeting to gather relevant information about your developmental, medical and psychosocial history, and the difficulties that bring you in. This guides the choice of tests.
Testing (about 5 hours over 2 to 3 sessions)
The neuropsychological tests assess the cognitive functions related to your reasons for consulting. With your consent, input from the professionals who follow you can enrich the analysis.
Feedback meeting (about 60 minutes)
A few weeks later, a feedback meeting presents the results and the report: observed strengths and difficulties, diagnoses where applicable, tailored recommendations, and answers to your questions.
Final report and follow-up
You receive the complete neuropsychological report. Follow-up meetings can be offered on request to support putting the recommendations into practice (additional fees may apply).
Your clinician
Justine Fortin is a doctoral candidate in neuropsychology (Ph. D./Psy. D.) at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and carries out neuropsychological assessments for adults as part of our multidisciplinary team.
During her doctoral training she completed clinical placements at the UQAM Psychology Services Centre, the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) and the Montreal Heart Institute, working with adults presenting a wide range of clinical profiles. She holds a research-based Master’s in psychology from the Université de Montréal and favours a rigorous, evidence-based practice grounded in compassion and attentive listening.
Assessments and reports are carried out under the supervision of Dr. Christine Gagnon, neuropsychologist, member of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec.

Who carries out the assessment?

Are ADHD and learning disorders assessed?
Yes, in adults (18 and over). The assessment can also support a request for academic or workplace accommodations.
How long does the assessment take?
It includes a clinical interview, 2 to 3 testing sessions and a feedback meeting a few weeks later. The total time varies with each situation; we give you an estimate from the first contact.
In English, French or Arabic?
All three. Assessments are offered in English, French and Arabic.
